You have now decided that you want to do affiliate marketing and have chosen a website to do it as your preferred platform for your affiliate business.
And now I am guessing you want to know how you can make an affiliate marketing website from scratch and build it to become a trusted online business that can make you good money, right?
Well, I will be showing you here, step by step, how you will build the initial foundation of the website and how you should run it so that you can start off in the right direction and work towards that throughout your journey.
So without any further ado, let’s dive right in.
How to Make a Website For Affiliate Marketing
Before you get to the point where you are actually building your affiliate site, there are a few things you need to have gotten out of the way. First of all, you need to have made a decision on what niche you are going to be in.
This will help you know what topics you will be discussing about and what the name of your website will be too. Choosing a niche also helps you become focused on the topic and aim to be the best at it and it should come before you take the step of building your website.
The second important thing is to have a basic understanding of affiliate marketing. Even though you don’t need to know everything about it as you start out, you should have gotten the basic idea of how it works and how people make money with it as well as what to expect.
I can personally help you with that since I created a valuable guide for beginners on that. And I would encourage you to read it first so that you have the concept of what you will be doing with the site at the back of your mind.
Here is the guide -> A beginner’s guide to affiliate marketing
Lastly, I would recommend you look for a good affiliate marketing course that will help you build different crucial aspects of the website the proper way so that you are able to run it well and earn from it.
The guide alone as well as what I will be sharing here are not sufficient for you to do it right. You need guidance with specific areas such as how to perform keyword research, writing top-quality content that converts, optimizing your content, and the website so that you get encouraging results.
Don’t rely fully on YouTube videos or affiliate websites out there to learn affiliate marketing. They will give you good value but will not cover everything exhaustively as a course would.
My personal experience with affiliate marketing has made me aware of the essence of a course as it helped me understand things much better than other affiliates out there and gave me the edge that helped me beat a good deal of the competition in the niches I have ventured into.
Feel free to look for the online affiliate training courses that you feel are perfect for you and choose the one that resonates with you.
Personally, I went for Wealthy Affiliate’s training course since it is cheaper, much better in quality and it gives you access to many useful resources such as a website building platform, content writing tool, keyword research tool, and free hosting for your websites.
They really do give you a one-of-a-kind deal there.
You can check out my fully detailed wealthy affiliate review to understand the value you will be getting from it on top of the training.
And with those 3 things, you are now set to build your website.
So get ready for the actual building process in the next section.
Getting Started With The Initial Website Making Phase
As you create your website, there are 2 other factors to keep in mind so that you are able to know the specific path you are going to be taking with your site. These two factors are the type of affiliate website you want to have and the budget you have set for it.
There are many types of websites that are used for affiliate marketing and you need to choose the kind of site you want to go with.
Some of the different types to affiliate websites include review sites, blogs, comparison websites, instructional websites, coupon websites, and resource websites.
I have discussed all these types of websites, how they work and examples of each in my post on how to learn affiliate marketing the proper way.
Most people prefer blogs and review sites as they are the most common ones and easy to work around, but it is entirely up to you to make a decision on what you feel is best for you.
Secondly, you need to set a budget for the money you will be investing in your website. But you should note that it is not a must for you to put money into your website as you begin.
You can always start out for free and then invest later as you develop the website.
And this leads me to the 3 types of budgets you can use:
1. Free to begin and invest later – This is where you build a website without investing a dime into it. This means getting a free website with a free theme from free website builders such as Wix, WordPress, Blogger, and Weebly among others. The good thing about this is that you don’t require money to do it. But the downside is that you don’t own the website and the quality of the website is low. You also have limited access to great resources that can improve the look and performance of your website.
I started out with this budget myself and then put money into a self-hosted website after a few weeks.
2. Invest in some resources but not all of them – This is where you have a little money to spare and you want to use it on to build your website in the best possible way. What you do here is to choose the most important resources you need for the website building process and then work with the free ones for those areas that are not completely necessary. Some of the important resources you can invest include a domain name, website hosting, and maybe a theme. And the other resources you always buy later are tools and plugins for various functions.
3. Invest in all the best resources you can – This is where you have enough money to spend on your website and you are willing to get everything that is needed to build a high-quality website. You buy a domain name, website hosting services, website theme, and the premium version of the best plugins for the website.
Any of these budgets is okay if that is what you manage at the moment. But you should aim to get to the third kind of budget after some time.
Making sure you are using the best resources and your site is at its best look and performance is essential as it shows your audience that you are a person who minds the state your online business, which makes people take you seriously. Also, It attracts other people who might be interested in doing business with you.
And this is a profitable strategy in the long run.
I will now be showing you how to create your affiliate website for the 3 budgets.
* The Free Way Budget (getting all free resources)
This is the easiest and cheapest way to create a website. Here, you will not be paying for any resources so as to get your website up and running.
You will be acquiring freely available tools and resources and will be using them until you are able to buy own your domain and improve the quality of your website with other better resources, which is naturally the aim of any affiliate marketer out there who uses their website for affiliate promotions.
In this example, I will be using the free Siterubix website builder, which is what I used for my first affiliate website when I was starting out years ago.
However, you can feel free to use other website builders such as Wix, WordPress, Blogger, or any other you feel works well for you.
Here are the steps you should take to get the website set up in a few minutes:
Step 1. Go to your Siterubix website builder and open the website building page.
Step 2. You might be given the option of building a website on a free domain or on a domain that you own. Choose the free domain.
Step 3. Choose a domain name for your website. Here, you should come up with a name that relates to the purpose of your website which is also catchy. Make sure it is easy to remember and it is a good representative for a brand. For example, if I was creating an affiliate website for the affiliate marketing niche, I would go with a domain like Affiliate Beast or Affiliate Xpress. If it is a fitness niche, I would choose something along Fitness Power or Fitness Hub.
The main idea is to use your creativity in choosing a name that anyone who reads it gets an idea of what the website is about. Be sure to remember that the domain and is what makes the URL (the address) of your website, so you want to keep it short for those who will want to type it in their browsers when they want to directly visit your website. If you can just have two or three names on the maximum, it would be perfect.
Once you have decided on the name, type it in the search box of the domain name and see if it is available. Let the words of the domain name be together. Don’t leave any spaces between them. So, if it is Affiliate Xpress, type it as affiliatexpress.
If the domain name is available, proceed to the next step. If it is not, then come up with another name that is available.
Please note that for a free domain, your domain name will have an extension that shows it is free and not yours. In my case, my domain name will have the Siterubix extension to show that it is owned by Siterubix. So the domain name will be affiliatexpress.siterubix.com
Step 4. Choose a title for your website. The title for your website is essentially the domain name but with spaces. That is, Affiliate Xpress will be the title for the domain name affiliatexpress.
Step 5. Choose a design for your website. This is now where you choose the theme for your website that dictates how the website will look like. There are plenty of free website themes as you can see below. Choose one that you want to represent the look of your website.
Just click on the one you want and then go to the next step.
Step 6. Build my website. After you are done with the previous step, you will only need to click the “build my website” button and wait for the website to be set up behind the scenes in a few seconds.
Step 7. See how your newly built website looks like. Once it is ready, you will be directed to the page that has the details of your website and the credentials for logging into the admin area.
Copy and paste the URL of your website on your browser and search so that you are able to see how it looks like from the visitor’s point of view. You can also click the URL itself to do the same.
The website shouldn’t have much on it since it is brand spanking new but as you add content, you will see it start looking good and professional.
And that is pretty much it.
You are done building your free website.
* The Mixed Budget (free + paid resources)
The second method is for a person who has set aside some money for the affiliate website but the money is not enough to cover for all the best resources needed to run the site, so you have to make good calculations and select the resources you are going to invest in first and what you will buy down the road.
If you are this person, the essentials you want to invest in first are a domain name, website hosting, and good website theme. These will help you make a high start with your website.
You will have your own website without the extension explained in step 3 of the previous section, and you will also have a beautiful look for your website that you can customize the way you want.
You can purchase your own domain name from any of the domain name sellers you know such as NameCheap, GoDaddy, or Siterubix or any that you like.
As for the website theme, you can choose any theme you want from the top theme sellers such as ThemeForest, Theme Trust, or Mint Themes or any others.
And to build your website with these 3 paid-for resources, here is how you should go about it (I will be using the Siterubix website builder still)
Step 1. Go to the Siterubix website building page
Step 2. Click on the site builder to open the page for creating the site
Step 3. In the next section, you will be asked which kind of website you want to build, either on a free domain or on a domain that you own. Click ” domain I own”.
On the right side of this section. You will see a provision named “Register a Domain”. Click that if you want to buy and register a domain name with the Siterubix platform and follow the steps to get the domain name you buy ready for creating the website.
After buying it, go back to the website builder and then click on a “domain I own” to continue building your website.
Step 4. Choose a domain name for your website. The next section will be linking the domain you bought to the website you are building. And it is as simple as clicking the arrow facing down on the second section that will bring out all the domain names you own. You will then choose the one you bought for this website.
Step 5. Enter a title for your website. The title, just as earlier said, should be the name of your domain but spaced out. In my case, since affiliatedove.com is my domain name, the title will be Affiliate Dove.
Step 6. Choose a design for your website. If you have already bought your preferred theme, you will just choose a free theme first and build the website and then change it in your admin area.
If you haven’t bought the theme yet, you can look around the theme section and choose the paid theme you think is your right fit and then continue with the process.
Step 7. Once you have chosen the theme, click “build my website” and wait for the website to be developed for you.
Step 8. See how the website you have built looks like. Immediately the website is built, you will be taken to the site manager where you will see all the details of the website. Just like in the previous section, copy the website URL and paste in on another tab in your browser and search it. You can click the website URL too to see the website.
You will be able to see how the website looks like and then you can plan on how you can further customize it to your taste.
And you are done.
If you have more money to spare. You can invest in 2 other essential services, which are, content writing (if you won’t be creating the content yourself) and in SEO (search engine optimization). You can also choose to write the content and pay for the SEO services or the other way around depending on what you can do by yourself.
* The Fully Paid Budget (getting all paid resources)
This is the route for someone who has enough money to handle the best way to set up the affiliate website and acquire the best tools and resources for affiliate marketing.
If this is you, you will be investing in the domain name, website hosting, and a website theme for the initial phase. You will follow the same steps to build the website as in the previous section for those who use some paid and some free resources.
When you are done creating the self-owned website, you should now consider investing in highly skilled content writers if you want to hire writing experts to be creating content for you. You can get them from freelance websites such as Fiverr, Iwriter, or Freelance.
After that, you will need SEO experts to do quality optimization for you. Often, the SEO experts may also be great developers that can help with the customization of your website, but you will pay them extra for those services.
Other than those 2 essentials, you will then go ahead and buy the tools that you will require to grow your website.
The first few tools include a keyword research tool such as Jaaxy, Soovle, Ahrefs Content Explorer or any other you know as well as plugins for various functionalities like getting your website SEO ready, increasing the speed of your website, further customizations of your site and connecting your website to Google Analytics, to name a few.
I recommend you buy the plugins only when you need them. Even if you have more than enough money, it is always wise to make sure you invest on what is worth it. You can easily be misled to buying things you don’t need and won’t ever use if you decide to buy them before you need them.
Going by the affiliate marketing course you will be using to grow your website, make purchases of the plugins the course recommends when you get to the point where you have to use them to execute a certain task on your site.
PLEASE NOTE: Unless you also plan to use Siterubix to build your site, things are going to be different from another website builder and you may have to buy website hosting services as part of the process. Wealthy affiliate offers free website hosting, that is why it is not included in the process. So be ready for a few extra steps when using other website builders.
Tips to Run And Maintain Your New Website
1. Grow the website consistently – It is quite important to make an effort to constantly work on your website. Make sure there is fresh high-quality content being posted on it, there is good SEO being done and the look of your website is user-friendly and easy to work with. Make a decision that you will always be improving it and seeing that it grows faster and better. It is the only way to beat your competitors and dominate the industry you are in.
2. Put in high-quality effort or hire the best in the industry – One thing that I have learned which has really given me encouraging results is ensuring that all the effort that is applied to my website is only high quality, nothing less. If it is the content, it has to be thorough, informative, and honest. I always aim to cover a topic in the best possible way without trying to hide or omit anything, or even try playing games with the readers.
Being upfront and creating helpful content is what will make you recognized and trusted. Please avoid publishing content that is barely helpful and also avoid working with bad SEO practices because these practices will sooner or later catch up with you and punish your website.
3. Allow for failure and disappointment – At the beginner level that you are in, I am sure that you have high hopes and expectations for the website. You look forward to getting the website ranked well in the search engines and start making money for you and keep increasing your commissions every month, everyone has that dream. However, the reality is very different than you would imagine.
In your affiliate journey, you are going to have lots of difficulties and failures, and this is okay too. You have to be aware that you will do some things wrong and you will get burned for it. You will be stranded at times and struggle to do the necessary things on your site and it will discourage you. But don’t let it break you or your dream of creating a successful affiliate website.
4. Be patient and wait for success the right way – While we aim to make money from affiliate marketing in a few months or weeks, the reality is that it may take you a few more months or even years to make a monthly income from it. So don’t be in a rush for that or you will be disappointed. Instead, direct your focus towards creating a reliable affiliate business with your website. Focus on the daily tasks and in doing them the best way.
As you do this, you will be able to find fulfillment in the process and you will make money sooner. But if you focus on the money right off the bat, you will be very discouraged a few weeks into it. As I have always said, affiliate marketing takes time and you simply want to be patient if you want to have it in the long term.
5. Create trust with your audience – One of the key assets you should have in your business is the trust from your audience. If you do anything that creates doubts and suspicion in your readers, it is really going to hurt you and affect your ability to make money. Trust is earned through honesty, integrity, and truthfulness. It is mostly based on your content. Always seek to be honest with your content.
Don’t say anything that is false or misleading. Don’t be afraid to promote a good quality product because it pays low commissions and instead promote a bad one. The bad one will reduce trust in your website and the good one, although paying low commissions, your income will add up very fast because many people will buy it.
6. Focus on creating a brand out of your affiliate business website – From now onward, see your website as a business that needs to be reputable and enviable in the niche you have chosen. Aim to create the best content and promote it better than anyone else. Let the readers who come to your website go back and tell their friends about it.
Let everyone who visits it always remember its name because of the value you offered.
That is how you are going to become a brand and people will just naturally come to your website for more information and advice. Do know that it takes blood, sweat, and tears to get there but it very doable. So be prepared to put in the work.
Ideally, creating an affiliate marketing website is not as hard as it is made to appear. It is actually possible when you have decided on the path you want to take and you have a good plan in place.
And I believe that if you follow the steps I have given you here, you should be having the initial phase of your website up and running in a few.
Also, I have equipped you well enough on how should run it, so you shouldn’t have any problems working on it to become whatever you envision for it.
I will you all the best with your new affiliate journey, and I am confident that you are going to make it something big.
If you ever need a hand with anything, please feel free to let me know in the comments below and I will be more than happy to help.
